Welcome to The Outcrop, the alumni magazine for the Department of Geoscience (formerly Geology and Geophysics), the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The Outcrop is a retrospective. "For 2009" is the most recent edition; "For 2010" will be available in spring 2011.
Please send alumni news, via U.S. mail or fax or email the editor (mention The Outcrop in the subject line) and we will publish your 2010 news and updates in the next edition.
The alumni newsletter has been published for over 30 years. It was initiated in 1970 "at the urging of the then-chairman, Sturges Bailey," according to Bob Dott in his 1999 article, "The Many Faces of The Outcrop." (downloads a 104k pdf) Dott's article also describes the very earliest Outcrops, originally created by graduate students, and begun in 1902. These colorful volumes are one-of-a-kind scrapbooks of department history and are preserved in the University Archives.
