New! BP RA's

Joint BP- UW Research Assistantship

BP and the Department of Geoscience are pleased to offer a Research Assistantship. The RA is intended for an incoming student who comes from a cultural or ethnic group that is under-represented in earth science, and intends to pursue graduate studies in any field of geology, geophysics, or geological engineering.

The Department of Geoscience, University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a highly ranked department with numerous disciplines that overlap the field of earth sciences, geological engineering, biology, geography, and ocean and material sciences. The RA is jointly funded by BP and the department. In addition to a stipend for the academic year (9 months), the RA carries a summer stipend, which is not normally covered, for example, in Teaching Assistantship appointments. At the current rates (2008-09), this 12 month stipend is $19,596 plus excellent benefits. In addition, BP and the department will cover tuition costs.

Criteria: Support to be directed to a first year* graduate student from an under-represented ethic group, and enrolled in an MS or PhD program that will provide the opportunity to develop technical and interpersonal skills needed for a successful career in the petroleum industry. Additionally, the candidate should have demonstrated a sincere interest in an eventual career in the petroleum industry. By agreement, this joint RA will be matched 1:1 by funds from non-BP sources to guarantee two full years of support.

*It is understood that the BP funds may be used in the second year of support, if conditions tied to the UW portion of the matching RA require that those funds be utilized in the first year (eg. AOF Program Funds).

The Department of Geoscience has had a long relationship with BP, and we welcome their interest in increasing diversity in the earth sciences. BP is a regular recruiter at UW-Madison, and has supported summer field work by many graduate students over the years, and they have helped support the expansion of Weeks Hall.
