Each year a number of companies donate money to the department to
help fund items such as field trips, summer field research, conference
attendance, scholarships, research assistantships, instruction, and faculty
research, just to name a few. This year
BP, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil have generously donated funds to the
department. BP has donated
their BP Fund, which they
give every year, whose primary purpose is to offset the cost of AAPG conference
attendance for those not presenting, as well as their BP Research Assistantship (see below). Anadarko
Petroleum Corporation has generously sponsored research in sedimentary basins by
Dr. Alan Carroll, and this money has provided the primary support for our work
in northern Alaska. In addition to
these, ConocoPhillips also gave a
gift donation. Among those companies
who gave matching donations this year are BP, ExxonMobil, and
ConocoPhillips.
In addition, it should be mentioned that each year BP donates money in support of the BP Research Assistantship, whose primary
goal is to encourage and support minority involvement in the geosciences. The R.A. covers tuition and books for one
calendar year. Minorities are
tremendously underrepresented in the geosciences, as well as in all of the
sciences. BP and UW-Madison are working
to change that.
