John Valley, Noriko Kita, and Neal Lord visited the CAMECA factory in December 2004. Major changes in the IMS-1280 from the previous IMS-1270 model include new digital electronics, Windows based computer system, improved automatic focusing of the secondary beam, control of stray magnetic fields in the sample chamber and secondary column, and NMR-control of the magnet. It is now more friendly to geologists.
