Long White Glacier

(to the tune of "Long Black Veil," Johnny Cash)

Anders Carlson, Glacial Class, spring trip 2001

  Fifteen k ago

  On a frozen bed

  From Madison

  Some ice fled

  Few glacial striations

  But a bunch of drumlins

  Showed the flow

  Of the Green Bay lobe

  Chorus

  The Johnstown moraine

  Showed compressing flow

  Stacking basal ice

  At the glacier's toe

  Drumlins w/diaperes

  Evident deformation

  Frozen or wet

  That's your estimation

  Chorus

  The glacier was high

  Grinding up sand stone

  Its time was due

Go back to the Kanook home

  But sometimes in winter

  When the cold wind blows

  Dark chills flow

The ghost of the Green Bay lobe

  Chorus:

  It carved these hills

  With a frozen terminus

  Deposited drumlins

  With a melting bed

  Nobody knows

  Nobody sees

  Nobody knows

  But the quats and me
