THE BALLAD OF GLACIER
DAVE
(To the tune
of The Beverly Hillbillies TV show theme song)
Glacial Geology Class of
1997 (Tom Brander)
Listen to the
story about a man named DAVE.
Wore a polka-dotted
hat but assured you he was sane.
When young
he quit catering even though he liked the food,
Instead he
loaded up his van and became the GLACIER DUDE!
Ice, that is.
Glaciers, a mile deep.
Well the first
thing you know Dave's on the faculty.
Showing all
his students what the glacial landforms mean.
The straitions
up at Valders left his students quite impressed,
But Dave just
watched and smiled 'cause he'd put it on their test.
Bulldozers,
that is. ... maybe doughnuts too.
Well the kids
diamictons over sand and gravel beds,
But most of
Dave's keen insights were slipping through their heads.
As they sat
around the fire eating supper at Point Beach,
They forgot
about the glaciers and kept the beer in easy reach.
Cold ones that
is. Help yourself!
Well another
year is passing by for Dave and all his friends.
Drumlins, eskers,
Kettle moraine, and Two Creeks Forest Bed.
Maybe someday
all these folks will know as much as Dave.
But the caps
that they will be wearing sure won't be the same.
