Paleocommunities of the Fort Thompson Formation (Pleistocene) of Florida

Taphonomy

We divided all our specimens by qualitatively assigning them to taphonomic grades based on the following criteria:
Excellent: Shell nacre shiny, no chipping or abrasion, no boring, sharp ornamentation, hinge teeth undamaged
Good: Somewhat more abraded, minor chipping, minor boring, hinge teeth undamaged
Poor: Heavily abraded, some chipping, hinge teeth potentially damaged, minor boring, ornamentation indistinct
Bad: Very heavily abraded, major chipping or breakage, ornamentation and hinge structures very indistinct, major boring

Chione cancellata valves from the Lower Zone were more likely to be in good or excellent condition than valves from the Upper Zone.

The worse condition of valves from the Upper Zone indicates that valves from this zone were more taphonomically altered than those from the Lower Zone.
