Textbook: Petrology: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic, 2nd ed., by Blatt and Tracy

Course website: http://www.geology.wisc.edu/~g370/

Grading:

The three segments of the course will contribute to the final course grade in the following proportions:

  • 40% Igneous
  • 27% Sedimentary
  • 33% Metamorphic

Within each segment of the course the following breakdown will apply:

  • 60% Lecture
      Subdivided as:
    • 35% Lecture Exam
    • 15% Homeworks
    • 10% Final Exam (cumulative portion)
  • 40% Lab
      Subdivided as:
    • 30% Lab Exercises
    • 10% Weekly Lab Quizzes

Lecture exams are scheduled as follows:

  • Igneous Rocks Exam - Friday, March 3rd in class
  • Sedimentary Rocks Exam - Friday, April 7th in class
  • Final Exam* - Tuesday, May 16th, 10:00am-Noon, AB20 Weeks Hall
*First Hour - Metamorphic Rocks, Second Hour - Cumulative

If you are unable to take any of the exams at their scheduled dates you must notify us ASAP prior to the scheduled exam and schedule a make-up exam. No make-up exams will be given without prior notification. Likewise, missed quizzes and labs will not be made-up without prior notification. Exams will cover both lecture material and readings from the textbook. Keep up with the readings in your textbook!

In addition to the above material, a number of "curve-buster" quizzes will be given during lecture throughout the semester. These extra credit quizzes are unannounced, may come at the beginning or end of class, and test major concepts from recent lectures and the assigned reading for that day. At the end of the semester points from the quizzes will be added up and used to push people near a grade boundary over the boundary. They are extra credit and cannot hurt your grade. Keep up with the material, and they give you an easy way to score some points.

Field Trip: Geology is basically a field science. Use of slides in class and hand samples in lab helps bring that field experience to you, but there is no real substitute for observing geologic features in their natural habitat. This should be a great opportunity for all of us! Although listed in the Timetable as optional, we consider the two day Petrology field trip to central and northern Wisconsin an essential part of this course. This year the trip will be held the weekend of Saturday, April 22nd to Sunday, April 23rd. If you cannot make this trip you must notify us within the first two weeks of class. We reserve the right to require a written assignment to be completed by those who do not attend the field trip.

Good luck!
