Question 1: What is a phase?
Answer: A phase is any distinct, mechanically separable part of any system i.e. minerals, melt, gas.

Question 2: What is a component?
Answer: Components are the chemical constituents needed to describe the system. A range of components could be used for a system, but "rules" require it to be the minimum number needed for a complete description.
