My thoughts on teaching have changed appreciably over the past few years. I now assess whether my teaching is effective by employing the research skills I previously applied only to geoscience problems. My change in approach largely started when I became involved with the Delta program at UW-Madison.
I am actively involved in education research. My main project involves testing ways to help students improve their three-dimensional visualization skills. I am pursuing this research with Sarah Titus, another graduate student here in Madison. Our results suggest that frequent practice with visual tasks helps improve students' visualization skills.
Sarah and I have developed sets of instructional materials for use in undergraduate geology classes. Most of these materials are designed to give students practice with spatial visualization so that they can improve these important skills. Please feel free to email me if you're interested in using any of these materials or if you'd like to discuss spatial visualization.
In the past I have been a TA for the following classes:I was also a lecturer for one semester at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, where I taught both the lecture and lab for Geosciences 414: Structural Geology.
