Kazan River - Nunavut Canada

During the summer of 2001, Amber Frank and I completed an 825-mile, 45-day unsupported expedition from Wollaston Lake, Saskatchewan to Baker Lake, Nunavut. Starting at Wollaston Lake, we headed northwest down the Cochrane River, crossed the watershed to the Theliawazia River, when 60 miles northeast up the Little Partridge River (where there was a river) to Kasba Lake. From Kasba Lake we followed the Kazan River north and east to Baker Lake.

Camping in a recent burn while still south of the tree line.

To get to the Kazan River we had to go about 60 miles up the Little Partridge River, which kept getting drier...

and drier...

Finally, after 8 grueling days we were rewarded with open water.

All those bug stories you may have heard about...they're true.

A Musk Ox on the banks of the Kazan River. Scratch-and-sniff web site needed for full functionality.

Barrenland Grizzly tracks (thank goodness only tracks). 72 mm lens cap for scale.

Portaging across the tundra.
