Quaternary Deposits and Neotectonics in the area of Pleistocene Glaciations
The Peribaltic Group of the INQUA Commission on Glaciation a joint field symposium with the Friends of the Baltic Quaternary, organized in Belarus in May 12-16, 1997 by Aleksey Matveyev, Irina Pavlovskaya and Alexandr Karabanov from the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus. This was a very interesting field symposium, during which we were introduced to the Quaternary geology of northern and western part of the country. We saw impressive quarries of glaciotectonically deformed chalk as well as of the Tertiary and Quaternary sequences at Krasnoselsky near Grodno, type sections of the Holstein and Eemian interglacials at Kolodezhny Rov and Zaslavl, sediments of the Warta Glaciation marginal zone at Vekshitsy, glacial sequences of the last glaciation and the lake series of the Alleröd age in the Naroch Lakeland. Equally interesting were the stories on history and archaeology of Belarus by Mikhail Chernavsky who accompanied us during long bus trips across the country. We had plenty of lively discussions which continued also in the evenings over the beer and bonfire, in friendly and relaxed atmosphere created by the organizers. Paper and poster sessions presented recent research in eastern and central Europe. The symposium abstract volume contains 82 abstracts and the excursion quidebook - an illustrated description of the visited sites and these are referenced below.
