Part II
A Scattering of Seeds: Cavosi in the New World
People from the villages settled across the United States, including northern Michigan, northern and southern Wisconsin, Pennsylvania,
New York, Missouri, and perhaps other places as of yet unknown. For now I am focusing on my
great-grandfather Egidio Giuseppe Cavosi and his brothers,
Angelo, Anselmo, Clemente, and Vigilio (William). They ended up settling in northern Wisconsin, northern Michigan, and eastern New York.
Sometime after they imigrated to America, the brothers added an 'e' to the end of their name, forever changing 'Cavosi' to 'Cavosie'.
The motivation of this decision is unkown, and of great interest to me. It is apparent from looking at historical records that the different brothers
changed their names at different times. One additional finding that I have made through examining historical documents that I'm sure of is that
anyone, past or present, that is named 'Cavosie' is related by blood to this family.
The Family Trunk: The story of five brothers, and the birth of 'Cavosie'
Anselmo, Vigilio, Angelo, Giuseppe, and Clemente Cavosi are five brothers who came from the village of Sfruz Italy. I have copies of the
original birth records
(in Italian) for Vigilio, Giuseppe, and Clemente, but none yet for Anslemo and Angelo. I know of their relation to the other siblings from family stories. They
statred immigrated to the USA in 1890, and were not all here until ~1905. Angelo, Vigilio, and Giuseppe settled in northern Wisconsin and Michigan
(Giuseppe in Hurley, WI; William in Ironwood, MI; Angelo in Bessemer, MI). Anselmo and Clemente both settled in Cohoes, NY.
