CONGRATULATIONS to John Valley on the publication of his new book
"Stable Isotope Geochemistry" edited with David R. Cole and published
by the Mineralogical Society of America. The book is in the Geology
and Geophysics Library and available for check out.
CONGRATULATIONS to Alumnus Tim Masterlark and his wife on the birth
of their son. Jack Isaac Masterlark (8.0 lbs, 21 inches) was born on
November 19. Jack joins big sister Cora in the Masterlark home.
GEOCLUB HOLIDAY PARTY ---- Will be held at the University Club on

UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS ----- Department of Earth Sciences Chair ----
Starting August 2002. Must hold a PhD degree in a discipline
appropriate to the department and must be or have been tenured with the
rank of Associate or full Professor. Will be directly involved in
organization and development of the new department and committed to the
concept of interdisciplinary and integrative studies within the earth

UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME, IN ---- Engineering and Geological Science
Undergrad summer research positions. 8 week appointment June 10 -
August 2, 2002. Applications due March 13, 2002. Later
applications considered until all funds awarded. Students from around
the country with outstanding academic records invited to apply to
participate in the program. Primarily directed toward students who
have completed their junior year of study, although outstanding individuals

Petrology/Mineralogy ---- Tenure track position at the Assistant Professor
level starting August 2002. Applicants must hold a PhD in a field of
geological sciences. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate

UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL ---- PhD studentships - A number of PhD
studentships are advertised in the area of
modeling of volcanic flows. The studentships would be based in the
Department of Earth Sciences and run for 3 years from 2002-2005 (the start
date is usually 1st October although there is some flexibility in
this). The proposed student ships and related papers can be viewed at

have (or be about to obtain) a good first degree in an Earth science or
physical science subject. Interest in volcanism and in experimental and

US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY MENDENHALL POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
PROGRAM
Program provides an opportunity to conduct research in association with
selected members of the USGS staff. Opportunities for research
available in a wide range of areas including application of stable isotope
and trace element techniques to ecological studies; hydrogeology of
fractured-rock aquifers; gas hydrate field and lab investigations; bitumen
generation and oil expulsion; landslide process studies; exploring active
volcano-tectonic processes; in situ studies of faulting and earthquake
generation; carbon dioxide sequestration; carbon cycling; remote sensing
research; applications of numerical modeling; and developing magnetic
models linking geophysics and geology. Fellowships are 2-year
appointments with full benefits and salaries. The closing date for
applications is January 18, 2002. Appointments will start between
October 2002 and May 2003, depending on availability of

THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY (NIST), in
cooperation with the National Research Council (NRC), offers competitive
awards for 2-year postdoctoral appointments in a broad variety of fields.
NIST, with direct responsibilities for the U.S. measurement network,
involves its laboratories in the most modern developments in the physical,
engineering, information, and mathematical sciences. The competition
is open only to citizens of the United States who have held the doctorate
(Ph.D., Sc.D. or equivalent) for less than five years at the time of
application. All application materials must be postmarked no
later than January 15, 2002 -- if awarded, appointments normally start

CTBTO Vacancy Announcement ----- Associate Seismic Officer -----
Vacancy Announcement No. VA16-43-2001 Application deadline is 14 December
2001, reporting date ASAP. Assist in the formulation of field
solutions for building and integrating seismic stations into the
International Monitoring System (IMS), providing input into seismic data
acquisition, communications technology, computer networking applications,
interface issues and data security/authentication. Must have University
degree in engineering (preferably electrical engineering),
geophysics, physical or computer sciences or a related field. At
least two years relevant working experience at the national or
international level in seismic data acquisition systems and knowledge
of computer networking principles, communications technology, critical

NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIVERSITY ----- Mineralogy and/or Petrology -----
Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a start date
of August, 2002. PhD by the start date is required. Will teach
