Summer research opportunities for undergraduates -------
Stony Brook State University of New York -----(Mineral Physics Institute
and Center for Environmental Molecular Science) Must be majoring in the
Physical and Environmental Sciences & Mathematics. Currently
soliciting student applications for NSF funded research experiences for
undergraduates programs. Selected students will receive a $3,500
stipend , travel allowance and housing on the University campus.
Spend 10 weeks working with faculty members & experience most of the
fundamental elements of academic research. All of the information

Undergraduate Grants ----- NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in
Greenbelt, MD ---- Summer Institute on Atmospheric, Hydrospheric and
Terrestrial Sciences. June 6 - August 12, 2005. For more

program is designed to introduce undergrads majoring in all areas of the
physical sciences to research. Directed primarily at those in their
junior year. There is no formal application form. Applications
should be submitted in the form of a letter. Deadline for receipt of
all materials relating to the appplication is Februaray 12, 2005.
UW-Madison Graduate Student Scholarships at Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms
University Bonn, Germany: As part of an exchange agreement, the
Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University at Bonn will offer two
scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year to University of
Wisconsin-Madison advanced graduate students and outstanding graduating
seniors who wish to follow an independent research program under the
guidance of a senior faculty member. This year two types of students may
apply: 1) applicants enrolled in a University of Wisconsin-Madison
doctoral program; 2) outstanding graduating seniors. Preference will
be given to dissertators; however, graduate students who have not yet
passed preliminary examinations for the Ph.D. will be considered. The
scholarship is not tenable for use after a terminal Masters Degree.

include a two-page summary statement describing the research to be pursued
at Bonn, an up to date curriculum vitae, a letter of support from the major

young researchers in the field of terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides. These
positions are funded by the EU in the framework of the research and
training network CRONUS-EU that started 1st of December. Looking for
10 postdocs and 5 PhD-students with a background/interest in the fields of
(geo-) chemistry, physics or Earth Surface sciences. The postdoc
positions are funded for up to 3 years, the PhD positions for 3 years. The
appointed researchers will work on diverse fields such as natural
calibration sites, artificial production targets, nuclide cross
calibration, numerical modeling, refinement of the 10Be decay constant, and
refinement of chemical routines. They will be trained in all relevant
aspects of methodology and application of terrestrial cosmogenic

University of Toronto -----
Full-time teaching-stream appointment at the rank of Lecturer.
The primary responsibilities will be to teach and provide innovative
support for undergraduate courses in geology. In addition, the
Lecturer will assist with field courses and provide support for laboratory
classes. Important secondary responsibilities are to take a
leadership role in geoscience awareness activities, and to engage in
university outreach programs. There is no requirement as Lecturer to do
research but the individual selected is not discouraged from this. A PhD in
Geology or a related area is required, together with evidence of excellence
in teaching at the university level. The appointment is available
from July 1, 2005. It is initially for a term of one year and, following a
successful review, will be renewed. Lecturer positions at the University of
Toronto are renewable annually and assessment for promotion to a continuing
Senior Lecturer rank may take place in the fifth year. Applicants

Seismological Laboratory ----- Applications are invited for the
position of Seismological Network Manager. This position is expected
to provide leadership for the day-to-day operations of all aspects of the
seismic network at the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. The role
includes a) project management of NSL contracts, with emphasis on close
interactions with the Yucca Mountain Project, to ensure full completion of
all contract requirements including quality assurance, b) interactions with
the network engineer to assure data retrieval from stations, c) control of
the computer programs that receive, organize, and save the data, d)
supervision of the seismic analysis in earthquake location processes, e)
support of data services such as internet distribution of the data, and f)
quality assurance of all products. A PhD or MS degree in
geophysics or related field from a nationally accredited institution.
With a M.S., applicants must have 4 years or a Ph.D. and two years
experience in managing technical projects. This position requires
excellent skills in human relations and effective

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University -----
A position is available for an entry level electronics
technician/engineer in the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia
University. Seek an aspiring technician who will provide support for
the Lamont-Doherty Cooperative Seismographic Network (LCSN, URL:

deployment, testing, operation, and repair of seismic equipment used to
acquire earthquake ground motion data. Field work to average 25-35%
of the time, seasonally (that is, 5-7 days a month, less in winter, more in

electronics/electrical engineering or 1-2 years of college and/or 3-5 years

University of Arkansas --- Research Technician for stream
biogeochemistry study ----Seeking a research technician to assist with a
NSF funded project to look at the impacts of nutrient enrichment on
dissolved organic matter cycling in headwater streams. This project
will entail substantial field and laboratory work including in situ
mesocosm experiments using 13C-labeled substrates and analysis of biofilms
for d13C of phospholipid fatty acids. The work will be conducted in
tributaries of the Illinois River and tributaries of the Buffalo River in
northwest Arkansas. Looking for applicants with at least a B.S. in
chemistry, biology, or some environmental science field. This position will
be available for the late spring or early summer 2005. Preference will be
given to those with a M.S. and/or those with previous field and/or

at Montreal (UQAM) is seeking a full-time research professional to manage
an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) laboratory.
Duties include development of new and established analytical methods for
stable and radiogenic isotopes, sample analysis and report preparation for
internal and external clients, trouble-shooting and maintenance of the
facility, supervision of facility use by researchers and students, and
graduate student training. Candidates must have a PhD degree in
Geology or Earth Sciences with specialization in isotope geochemistry, and
experience in developing and testing analytical techniques using a
multi-collector mass spectrometer. The working language at UQAM is
French and a very good knowledge of English is also required.

watershed hydrology and stable isotope techniques applied to the analysis
of forested montane watersheds. Study water and carbon dynamics using
stable isotopic tracers. The applicant will build an isotopic mass
