CONGRATULATIONS ------ John Valley has been named the recipient of the American Geophysical Union's N.L. Bowen award.  Presentation of the award will be at the Fall 2003 AGU meeting. Bowen was one of the greatest petrologists in the early part of the last century, known for his experimental investigations on the evolution of magmas.

OHIO UNIVERSITY -- Athens, Ohio - MS. Research Opportunities in the Acatlán Complex, Southern Mexico.  Opportunities exist for qualified individuals with a BS degree in Geology to join a NSF-funded graduate (MS) project on the Acatlán Complex of southern Mexico.  Interested individuals should be prepared to undertake field research in igneous, metamorphic, and/or structural geology-tectonics in one of several field areas within this Paleozoic volcano sedimentary-plutonic terrane that are targets for detailed geochemical, geochronological, and kinematic study.  Successful candidates will be accepted into the graduate program at Ohio University with a full tuition scholarship and a two-year research assistantship.  Candidates should plan to join the project in September 2004 or before.  For further information and details contact:  R. THE BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is the UK's geoscience strategic mapping and research organization. Two vacancies have arisen for Isotope Geochemists in the NERC Isotope Geosciences Laboratory (NIGL) at headquarters in Keyworth.
Post 1. Have responsibility for the scientific (and some analytical aspects) use of silica oxygen and silicon isotopes (from diatoms, sponge spicules, phytoliths etc) in palaeoclimate/palaeoceanography research. Duties include the chemical preparation and mass spectrometric analysis of samples for O and Si isotopes, as well as heading research programmes and involvement with publication of the data.  Must be a post-graduate with a PhD in Earth Sciences, with emphasis on Quaternary Science, Palaeolimnology or Palaeooceanography.
Post 2. Undertake research involving U-Pb dating, U, Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr and Pb isotope analysis addressing both solid earth and environmental geoscience. Must have a PhD in geosciences or an MSc with proven expertise in analytical isotope geochemistry. Experience with U-Pb dating is essential.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY ----- Post Doctoral Fellows Program ----- Earth Institute Fellows Program in Sustainable Development (granted for 24 months).  Seekng post-doctoral candidates interested in enhancing their disciplinary research (in one of the core disciplines represented within the Earth Institute, i.e., any of the earth sciences, biological sciences, engineering sciences, social sciences, or health sciences), while at the same time acquiring the cross-disciplinary expertise and breadth needed to addresses critical issues related to sustainable development and reducing environmental degradation, poverty, hunger, and disease.  Applications accepted now for fellowships starting in the Summer of 2004. UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING ------ Postdoc Position in Marine Seismology to begin in February 2004. Will participate in analysis of marine seismic reflection and refraction data, with special emphasis on seismic imaging of oceanic thermohaline structure - http://faculty.gg.uwyo.edu/holbrook/ocean/ocean.html . Seek candidates with knowledge of and research experience in, processing, modeling, and interpretation of multichannel reflection and wide-angle reflection/refraction seismic data. Applicants should have a willingness to participate in field programs, both at sea and on land, and familiarity with advanced imaging techniques.  The term of the position is two years, with potential reappointment for third year. ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY ----  Geodynamics/Department of Geological Sciences ----- Tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level to join and contribute to a rapidly growing research program in Earth and Planetary Interiors. WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY ------ Groundwater Hydrology -----  Department of Geology seeks a geoscientist for a tenure-track position in groundwater hydrology to begin Fall 2004.  Anticipate filling the position at the Assistant Professor level although will consider exceptional candidates at higher levels.  Area of specialization is open but particularly interested in someone who can interact with existing Earth surface process-oriented research involving watershed hydrology, ecohydrology, basalt hydrogeology, paleopedology and terrestrial paleoclimatology.  Contact person is Kent Keller, email ckkeller@wsu.edu and libey@wsu.edu. PENN STATE UNIVERSITY ------ Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Petrology ---- The Department of Geosciences  expects to hire three tenure-track Assistant Professors over the next three years in the areas of hydrogeology (broadly defined), geophysics (lithospheric deformation in particular, including active tectonics and satellite geodesy), and petrology (igneous and metamorphic processes, high-temperature geochemistry).  Invite applications in any of these fields for the first position with a possible starting date of July 1, 2004. OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY ----  The School of Geology ---- Tenure-track, Assistant Professor,  position in the general area of basin analysis/basin evaluation effective August 1, 2004. GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY ---- Atlanta, Georgia ---- Analytical Geochemistry position.   The Department of Geology ----- Tenure track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor or beginning Associate Professor, in Analytical Geochemistry, beginning August 15, 2004.  Take over operation and management of the department's NSF-funded Regional Laser Ablation ICPMS laboratory (http://www.gsu.edu/~geoamg/Page_3.html) and expected to develop a productive externally funded research program emphasizing data generated in the ICPMS laboratory.
