----- Full-Time, October 14 closing date --- Coordinate with other
staff seismologists daily lab operations pertaining to processing,
analysis, and archiving of earthquake data. Organize computer
processing algorithms, as well as code development for earthquake
processing on Sun/Solaris computer systems. Responsible for
immediate action in the event of a seismic or volcanic crisis,
coordinating 24 hour seismic monitoring with fast, accurate analysis of
data so that hazard assessment and decisions regarding public safety may
be made by emergency agencies. Requires at least a Masters Degree
in seismology with extensive experience (Ph.D. preferred) or
equivalent. Located at the Geophysical Institute of the University
of Alaska Fairbanks, the Alaska Earthquake Information Center

applications for TWO joint tenure-track faculty positions in microbiology
at the assistant professor level. Applicants must have a PhD and

The Institute of Isotope Geology and Mineral Resources --
Zurich ---- has several Postdoctoral Research Positions in Isotope
Geochemistry available to be filled. Applicants should hold a Ph.D.
in geochemistry/cosmochemistry and should have demonstrated outstanding
expertise in some of the following areas: mass spectrometry, analytical
chemistry, geochemical modelling and/or planetology, mantle geochemistry,

AFRICAARRAY

Candidates are sought to fill AfricaArray post-doctoral positions at
The Pennsylvania State University (PSU), North Carolina Agriculture
and Technology State University (NC A&T), and The University of the
Witwatersrand. AfricaArray is an initiative to promote
geophysics education and research in Africa by tightly coupling
degree-granting programs at African universities with a Pan-African
network of geophysical observatories, and to enhance diversity in the
U.S. geosciences by offering opportunities for undergraduate science and
engineering students at minority-serving institutions to participate in
research and field work in Africa. Applicants must have a
Ph.D. degree at the time of appointment. The deadline for

1) Post-doctoral position at PSU: Candidates should
have a background in earthquake seismology and experience using broadband
seismic data to image Earth structure. Field experience is

The successful candidate will have opportunities to participate in the
installation and operation of seismic networks in Africa and to conduct
research on imaging the seismic structure of the African crust and

Universidad de Colima, Mexico ----- Postdoc position in
volcanology ------Centre of Exchange and Research in Volcanology ----

sought for the position of postdoc in the Centre of Exchange and Research
in Volcanology, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad de Colima,
Mexico. The successful applicant will assist with various research
projects and monitoring programs. The research is focussed on the
integration of various data sets to produce models to explain variations
in activity at Volc=E1n de Colima. The Mexican Government has recently
agreed to finance the upgrading of the monitoring network around Volc=E1n
de Colima and so soon the number of data streams will greatly increase.
An important part of the work will be helping to install and maintain
parts of the monitoring network and the analysis of the data. There will
be an opportunity to work on some of the other active volcanoes of
Mexico. Looking for an enthusiastic person with initiative who has
recently finished their PhD to come and work at the University of Colima
for an initial 6 month period. It is highly likely this period will be
extended. The successful applicant will be expected to help with the
development of new courses at undergraduate level. There will be the
opportunity to teach on the Masters course in Earth Science. The
person needs to have had a decent amount of field experience on active
volcanoes, and some ability to program in Matlab would be desirable. They
would need to be reasonably fluent in both Spanish and English. The start

UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA ------Assistant Research Scientist Position
in Material Characterization ----- The Center for Advanced
Ultrastructural Research (CAUR) at University of Georgia announces an
opening for a material characterization specialist in the field of
electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. The CAUR supports seven
major research instruments --- two SEMs, two TEMs, a multiphoton/confocal
microscope (polarization/DIC capable), an X-ray microtomography unit, and
a digital inverted fluorescence microscope. The center has a large and
growing user community in the physical, material, and geological
sciences. This person will be hired at the level of Research Assistant
Scientist, which is a long-term promotion-track position.
Candidates should have a publication record and commensurate skills in
materials science, electron diffraction, and sample preparation of both
synthetic and natural materials. A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in the
physical sciences required. The individual will be responsible for
training and supervising users for TEM, SEM, X-ray microtomography,
collaboration on research proposals, and will have an opportunity for
conducting and publishing research in their own area of
