Anyone who hasn't taken the class in the last 3 years needs to retake in order to stay certified to drive the vans. You must be 25 years old to qualify as a van driver.

To: Carl and Judy Bowser on the birth of their grandson, Jacob Bradley Dendy.  He arrived on Labor Day (9/1/03) and weighed in at 8 pounds 7 ounces.

NSF GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

 EDMAP 2004 REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP Announcement Number 04HQPA0004) is available on the USGS website at: http://www.usgs.gov/contracts/  EDMAP, the training component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, supports both graduate students and undergraduates (Juniors and Seniors who have completed requisite course work in field methods). EDMAP provides funding to students who are doing research involving a significant amount of geologic mapping.  In 2003, EDMAP supported over 50 students at 39 universities across the nation. The maximum award to graduate students is $15,000 and the maximum award to undergraduates is $7,500. Proposals must be written and submitted by the professor who supervises the students.   Read the RFP for details.  Proposals are due November 21, 2003.  It is helpful if the project is associated with a State geological survey or a USGS project. NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) ---- The Director of the NSF has released a letter requesting assistance in identifying candidates to fill the position of Assistant Director for Geosciences. See URL for additional details:   http://www.nsf.gov/od/geosrch/nsf_adgeo_search_letter.htm   The appointment is to be made by February 1,2004.  A Search Committee has been formed. Robert Gagosian, Director of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will chair the committee. Other members are Tim Killeen, Director of NCAR; Sean Solomon, Carnegie Institution of Washington; and Stephanie Pfirman, Barnard College.  To recommend a candidate, please provide the name and any supporting information that is available to you to AD/GEO Screening Committee via e-mail <geosrch@lists.nsf.gov>  Recommendations must be submitted no later than September 15, 2003.

CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY ---- Geochemist/Inorganic Chemist to fill a tenure-track position in the Department of Physical Sciences, at the assistant professor level, effective Fall 2004. A PhD in Geochemistry or Inorganic Chemistry is required.  In addition, a demonstrated ability to teach physical and environmental geology, inorganic chemistry, general chemistry, interdisciplinary core courses, general education courses and the ability or potential to acquire extramural funding, as well as a commitment to working with students and developing collaborative research. THE ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY ----- Geophysical Institute Seismology and Volcanology - Post Doctoral Fellow - PCN: 924027 - Full-Time, term of one year with possibility of extension for a second year.  Opening  September 5, 2003.  Open until filled, review of applications will begin October 15, 2003.  Seeking candidate to participate in research for the detection and monitoring of volcanic eruptions using broadband and short-period seismic data together with other geophysical data. Monitoring research may include spectral analyses and determination of near-real-time locations and magnitudes.  Anticipate the successful candidate will spend half of their time in observatory monitoring activities and the other half pursuing related research.  Qualifications: PhD in Seismology or related field at the time of appointment.  APPLICATION: A UA Applicant Form must be completed and submitted for consideration of employment.
