SPRING SEMESTER FACULTY MEETINGS ------ March 30, April 6, and May 4.
GEOBADGER ALUMNI WEEKEND ------ Reminder to PLEASE sign up
for all the events you are planning to attend. It is the weekend of
May 6 - 8, but deadline for signing up is April 1st!!!!!
Activities start Friday, May 6th with the dedication of the west wing and
culminate on Saturday evening with the Spring Banquet. Please get
your registrations in ASAP.
INTERNATIONAL VOLCANOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL ----- The deadline for
applications for the second annual International Volcanological Field
School is April 1. Students can choose a two week session of scientific
and cultural discovery in either the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes,
Katmai National Park, Alaska or Gorely and Mutnovsky Volcanoes,
Kamchatka, Russia with 3 credits at the undergraduate or graduate levels.
A grant from the National Science Foundation brings Russian Far East
students to Alaska and subsidizes the cost of American students to travel
to Kamchatka. For more information and to apply, visit

ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN GEOSCIENTISTS ------ Several programs that
benefit students and faculty as follows:
1. AWG-Conoco Phillips Distinguished Lecture Program ---- provides
well-known female speakers in most disciplines of the geosciences.
Departments can receive up to $800 per year toward speaker expenses.
2. Minority Scholarship ---- one or more awards for undergraduate
women who are African-American, Hispanic or Native American.
Applications due May 15.
3. Geologist-in-the-Parks ---- Four positions with stipends for women
graduate students or professionals; applications due April 15.

Engineering Seismologist 05-032 (Assist in the development of
stochastic risk models, with emphasis on Earthquake related risk
models, evaluate and develop models to characterize the ground motion
induced by earthquakes and its relationship to damage. Position
Requirements
- Ability to apply
scientific method in defining a problem, formulating alternative solutions,
and selecting best alternative to achieve the stated objective(s)
- Excellent computer
programming skills: FORTRAN, Visual Basic, C
- Experience in data
management tools: SQL, MS Access, dBase, etc.
- Experience in GIS
tools: MapInfo, ArcView, etc.
- Good oral and
written communication skills, especially in presenting technical content to
wide range of audience sophistication.
- Bachelor of
Science degree in Engineering, Seismology, Geology, Geophysics, or related
fields
- Advanced degree
(Masters or PhD) or relevant professional experience preferred.

RECRUITMENT WEEKEND ---------- This is our annual
recruitment weekend. We have approximately 14 prospective grad
students visiting this weekend so help make them feel
welcome. Most arrived yesterday and will be staying until
tomorrow or Sunday. We hope they all will want to come to Madison
and spend a few years with us.
Western Michigan University - Department of Geosciences ------ Field Camp ----- Geos. 564; Summer I, 2005 ----
Professor W. Sauck will be offering an intensive 3 1/2 -week field course, beginning May 25 and
ending June 22. Note that this is full-time, but covers only the
latter half of the Summer I term. The prerequisite is an
Introduction to Geophysics course or consent of the instructor. In
addition to the University tuition, there is an additional course fee of
$150 for transportation and related costs. Meals and lodging will be the
responsibility of the individual students. Equipment
familiarization work will begin at the WMU Geophysical Test Site, and
then a series of projects will be done at environmental sites (including
a former refinery), an archaeology site, and regional and glacial geology
mapping sites. This is a hands-on course where the student will
learn to use a variety of modern geophysical equipment and related
