IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center and EarthScope USArray Array
Operations Facility at New Mexico Tech. The Incorporated Research
Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Program for Array Seismic Studies of
the Continental Lithosphere (PASSCAL) has an opening for a summer
student intern. The duration of the internship is flexible (up to
three months) This position is designed for an advanced
undergraduate or graduate student who has an interest in experiment
design, field methods, seismograph electronics, and data processing. For

University of Maine ----- The Department of
Earth Sciences invites applications for a tenure- track faculty position
in mineralogy, petrology, and the material behavior of the earth. Seeking
applicants with an interest in the dynamic and chemical interactions of
earth materials during reaction and deformation. The specific areas of
research are open and can include: non-equilibrium thermodynamics,
metamorphic petrology, rheology of the lithosphere, coupled reaction and
deformation, fluid-solid interaction, ice dynamics. The Department has
four areas of emphasis: Geodynamics, Climate/Quaternary studies, Marine
Geology, and Environmental Geology/Geochemistry. Anticipate
candidates who are primarily interested in applying petrological and
geochemical approaches to geodynamic processes, but welcome interaction

University of Arkansas ------ Seeking a laboratory research
assistant to help in the day-to- day operation of the Stable Isotope
Laboratory

mass spectrometers for stable isotope analysis. Will work closely
with the lab manager, as well as graduate and undergraduate students at
the University of Arkansas. Primary responsibilities will include: (1)
sample preparation for stable isotope analyses at UASIL, (2) maintain
bacterial cultures for our automated nitrate in water set up, (3) data
entry and management using LIMS (4) QA/QC monitoring. Seek

Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada ----- Operator of
CF-IRMS ---- The Worsfold Water Quality Centre is a multidisciplinary
analytical facility that utilizes state-of-the-art instrumentation. The
focus of the Centre is the determination of trace quantities of inorganic
and organic substances found in the environment. The Centre operates,
among other mass spectrometers, two CF-IRMS and associated preparation
systems (2 Elemental Analysers and a MultiFlow), and analyzes H, O, C, N
and S isotopes in soil, sediment, water, and biological samples.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day operation
of two GV Instrument Isoprime CF-IRMS's and associated prep systems,
perform routine maintenance of the instruments, develop new methods,
ensure data quality, and train users. The candidate should have an MSc
(PhD preferred) in Environmental or Earth Science, Chemistry, Biology,
with at least 3 years hands-on experience in CF-IRMS and associated prep
systems (EA and MultiFlow). The position can be filled as either a
research technician or a postdoctoral associate. The position is

University of Florida ------ The Soil and Water Science Department
at the University of Florida seeks an individual to manage the
Department's stable isotope research facility consisting of a Finnigan
DeltaPlus XL isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS). This facility
supports environmental research being conducted by three University of
Florida Departments and several local and state agencies. Three years
experience in facilities management, mass spectrometry, and a bachelor's
degree in an appropriate area of specialization are required (M.S.
preferred). Interest in methods development and novel applications of
IRMS in environmental research is highly desirable. The facility manager
will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the mass
spectrometer and inlet systems, training of students in mass
spectrometry, coordinating instrument usage, overseeing laboratory

a Tennessee Center of Excellence with salary supported 100% by

Geodesy as applied to crustal deformation, the earthquake process, and

April 1, 2007. Looking for an internationally renowned scientist
from the fields of experimental geochemistry, experimental geophysics

extreme pressures. Research activities should make a major contribution
towards understanding the Earth's interior and the terrestrial
