Summer Student Internships,
IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Cente
r and  EarthScope USArray Array Operations Facility at New Mexico Tech.  The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Program for Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere (PASSCAL)  has an opening for a summer student intern. The duration of the  internship is flexible (up to three months)   This position is designed for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student who has an interest in experiment design, field methods, seismograph electronics, and data processing. The Department of Earth Sciences invites applications for a tenure- track faculty position in mineralogy, petrology, and the material behavior of the earth. Seeking applicants with an interest in the dynamic and chemical interactions of earth materials during reaction and deformation. The specific areas of research are open and can include: non-equilibrium thermodynamics, metamorphic petrology, rheology of the lithosphere, coupled reaction and deformation, fluid-solid interaction, ice dynamics. The Department has four areas of emphasis: Geodynamics, Climate/Quaternary studies, Marine Geology, and Environmental Geology/Geochemistry.  Anticipate candidates who are primarily interested in applying petrological and geochemical approaches to geodynamic processes, but welcome interaction with the other areas of emphasis. Millennium Chemicals ------ a Lyondell Company,  producer of Titanium Dioxide, is seeking a microscopist with experience in the areas of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to support R&D, Commercial and Manufacturing activities at its Baltimore Research Center.   Minimum M.S. in chemistry, mineralogy, material science or similar field, with 7-10 years experience in an industrial R&D environment preferred.  The primary responsibility of the position is the application of advanced microscopic techniques to investigate properties, mineralogy, phase distribution, morphology and structure/function relationships of pigmentary and catalytic TiO2 particles, catalysts and polymers. University of Arkansas ------ Seeking a laboratory research assistant to help in the day-to- day operation of the Stable Isotope Laboratory ( http://www.uark.edu/ua/isotope)   Have three isotope ratio mass spectrometers for stable isotope analysis.  Will work closely with the lab manager, as well as graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Arkansas. Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada ----- Operator of CF-IRMS ---- The Worsfold Water Quality Centre is a multidisciplinary analytical facility that utilizes state-of-the-art instrumentation. The focus of the Centre is the determination of trace quantities of inorganic and organic substances found in the environment. The Centre operates, among other mass spectrometers, two CF-IRMS and associated preparation systems (2 Elemental Analysers and a MultiFlow), and analyzes H, O, C, N and S isotopes in soil, sediment, water, and biological samples.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day operation of two GV Instrument Isoprime CF-IRMS's and associated prep systems, perform routine maintenance of the instruments, develop new methods, ensure data quality, and train users. The candidate should have an MSc (PhD preferred) in Environmental or Earth Science, Chemistry, Biology, with at least 3 years hands-on experience in CF-IRMS and associated prep systems (EA and MultiFlow). The position can be filled as either a research technician or a postdoctoral associate. University of Florida ------ The Soil and Water Science Department at the University of Florida seeks an individual to manage the Department's stable isotope research facility consisting of a Finnigan DeltaPlus XL isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS). This facility supports environmental research being conducted by three University of Florida Departments and several local and state agencies. Three years experience in facilities management, mass spectrometry, and a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization are required (M.S. preferred). Interest in methods development and novel applications of IRMS in environmental research is highly desirable. University of Memphis ----- The Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI,) http://www.ceri.memphis.edu seeks applications for the position of Research Scientist.  This is a grant funded position through CERI as a Tennessee Center of Excellence with salary supported 100% by grants.  The position is for 12 months and is available starting April 1, 2006. Reappointment is dependent on continued grant funding.  Seek a colleague with expertise in all aspects of GPS Geodesy as applied to crustal deformation, the earthquake process, and application of the results to seismic hazard analysis.  Applicants must have a PhD at the time of employment and show a demonstrated record of research productivity or strong promise in research.  Applicant must have experience in GPS field work in the Central US and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, High Precision GPS data processing, elastic and viscoelastic modeling of GPS data and publication of previous work. Applicant must be capable of performing and leading GPS fieldwork in the Central US and remote areas of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands for 3-4 months a year. University of Las Vegas ------ Geophysical Research Associate Position ----- Currently recruiting for the position of Geophysical Research Associate (GRA).  The GRA assists the Laboratory Director and other UNLV staff in planning hands-on research activities in geophysics and geotechnical engineering as well as design, conduct, oversight, and coordination of projects in the departments of Geoscience and Civil and Environmental Engineering ( http://earthquakes.unlv.edu). In addition, the GRA develops and maintains geophysical test instrumentation, manages field-test logistics, collects, processes and archives geophysical data, trains users, maintains the laboratory, and provides administrative support.
Qualifications include a B.S., or higher, degree in engineering, geophysics, or a related field at the time of appointment, or four or more years of experience relevant to support of in-house and field seismology operations. University of Bayreuth ------ Germany ----- Full Professorship (W3) in Experimental Earth Sciences ----- The position is available from April 1, 2007.  Looking for an internationally renowned scientist from the fields of experimental geochemistry, experimental geophysics and/or mineral physics. Applicants should have a broad experience in development and application of experimental techniques at high and extreme pressures. Research activities should make a major contribution towards understanding the Earth's interior and the terrestrial planets.  Part of the teaching will be in English.  In addition to a Ph.D., applicants should have appropriate experience in research and teaching.
