Assistantship ----- The Geohydrology Section of the KGS invites
applications for up to 3 applied Geohydrology Summer Research
Assistantship positions for the summer of 2006. The positions are
available for graduate students and upper-level undergraduates with an
interest in learning more about recent developments in hydrogeological
field methods. Positions are open to students at any
university. Positions available after May 15, 2006.
Application deadline is March 1, 2006. This assistantship is a
three-month summer position during which the individual will work
with KGS hydrogeologists on a variety of field activities in support of
KGS research programs. There are expected to be three primary
themes for the activities in the summer of 2006. Fifty percent of
the summer will be spent on fieldwork in support of a study of
groundwater consumption by phreatophytes in riparian corridors.
Twenty percent of the summer will be spent on fieldwork in support of a
study of stream-aquifer interactions Twenty percent of the summer will be
spent investigating new direct-push methods for estimating spatial
variations in hydraulic conductivity . The remainder of the summer
will be spent on preparing the results of the research for
publication. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Relevant coursework in
earth sciences or engineering. Interest in
hydrogeology. Apply online at

ALFRED WEGENER INSTITUTE FOR POLAR AND MARINE RESEARCH (AWI) -----
Member of the Hermann von Helmholtz-Association of German Research
Centers Within the newly established Helmholtz-funded Young Investigator
Group "Applications of molecular 14C analysis for the study of
sedimentation processes and carbon cycling in marine sediments", the
Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar- and Marine Research invites

preservation potentials. Detailed compositional analyses of total lipids
combined with molecular level isotopic (13C and 14C) measurements of
selected biomarkers will be used to study alteration processes occurring
during transport, re-suspension events and after burial in sediments,
along transport pathways and down-core profiles. Seek an individual
