Format:
Two lectures per week and 1 discussion. Lectures will supplement text, not duplicate it. Some materials covered in lecture will not be covered in textbook. Lecture attendance is required and will be monitored via the "clickers" that you should have purchased for the class. Please read the assigned material before lectures. Discussion exercises will supplement the lectures and will be used to introduce and discuss homework assignments.
Grading:
Exams will be mostly multiple choice and short answer. Make-up exams are not given. If you miss an exam for a legitimate reason, you may with the consent of one of the faculty write a paper to replace the missing grade. Such a paper will be substituted for your lowest exam grade. If your score on one of the two midterms is below 65%, you also have the option to write a paper that will replace that exam score. Such a paper must follow the guidelines provided and must cover a topic that includes both geology and an environmental issue. All work must be done independently unless otherwise specified. If you wish to write a paper, you must obtain and follow guidelines from one of the instructors. The due date for the optional paper is 5 PM, Wednesday, Dec. 8. Each exam will be given a numerical score. The exam grade for the course will be curved based on the total number of points from the midterms and final. Discussion grades will be averaged with the exam grade to determine the final course grade. The first and second midterms will cover the material for Weeks 1-5 and Weeks 6-9, respectively, and will not be cumulative. The final exam will be approximately 1/3 cumulative.
