Course description:

Need a few extra science credits, but can't fit them into your schedule?

mesozoic turtle skullThis course provides an introduction to dinosaurs and other major groups of land vertebrates that coexisted with the dinosaurs, including crocodilians, pterosaurs, and the ancestors of mammals. The course also covers marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs and mosasaurs. Approximately two thirds of the course is devoted to a chronological survey of Mesozoic vertebrates; the other third covers topics and techniques that are relevant to a broad range of problems in vertebrate paleontology.

The Age of dinosaurs is intended primarily for undergraduate non-majors, and for non-traditional students, such as teachers. As an online course, it is designed to include students who do not have physical access to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, its libraries and collections. All necessary materials, including all readings, will be available on the web via "Learn@UW". Currently employed teachers and other non-traditional students should contact the instructor for special registration information.

By taking and successfully completing "The Age of Dinosaurs", you will become eligible to register for a one-credit field course, to be offered this Summer, 2005. This course will consist of a one week trip to Wyoming, and will include instruction in field identification, prospecting, excavation, and preparing site maps. Transportation, food, and lodging will be provided. Enrollment is limited to 60 students per summer, and enrollment priority will be given to K-12 teachers.

The first trip was a success. Click the image above for more photos and a summary of the field season.
