Obtaining Free Virus Protection Software
Every computer that is attached to the network in Weeks Hall must be equipped with virus protection software. There is a campus-wide license that provides a free copy of Symantec Anti-Virus to all faculty, staff and students.

Symantec Anti-Virus can be downloaded from here.

Making sure you web browser is up-to-date will also help secure your computer from viruses.

    Windows XP
  1. Before you do anything, uninstall any anti-virus programs you already have.
  2. Obtain the program from the link above and run the executable once it's downloaded.
  3. When the LiveUpdate dialog appears click "Next".
  4. Click "Finish" once LiveUpdate is done running.
  5. Close the old definition dialog if it appears.
  6. Reboot the computer once the installation is finished.

    You should now set up Symantec Anti-Virus to check for and download new virus definitions daily.

  7. Open Symantec Anti-Virus by double-clicking on the yellow shield in the bottom right corner by the taskbar.
  8. Open "Schedule Updates" from the "File" menu.
  9. Click the "Schedule.." button.
  10. Change the frequency to daily.
  11. Change the when to a time the computer will most likely be turned on and attached to the network.
  12. Click "OK". Click "OK" again and exit the program.
  13. You now have active and automatically updating virus protection running.
    Mac OS X
  1. Uncompress the Norton Anti-Virus package from DoIT.
  2. Find the Norton Anti-Virus 10 installer and run it.
  3. Follow the prompts to install the program.

    You should now set up Symantec Anti-Virus to check for and download new virus definitions weekly.

  4. Once the program is installed find it in the Applications folder and run it.
  5. Click "Update Now" if asked to update the program.
  6. Click "Update Everything Now".
  7. While the update is running click the "Schedule" button.
  8. Click "New" and pick "Product Update" from the two choices that appear.
  9. Select "Weekly" and pick a day and time when the computer will most likely be turned on and attached to the network.
  10. Click "Save".
  11. You can now exit Norton Anti-Virus.
  12. You now have active and automatically updating virus protection running.
