Checking E-mail on a Personal Computer
Follow these instructions to setup Eudora or Mail.app to check Geology e-mail on your own personal computer.
    Windows
  1. When you install Eudora, create a folder underneath "My Documents" to store your mail in.
  2. Launch Eudora.
  3. Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Options".
  4. Highlight the "Getting Started" category.
  5. Put in your real name. This will be sent along with your e-mails.
  6. Enter "geology.wisc.edu" for "Mail Server (Incoming)" and "SMTP Server (Outgoing)".
  7. Enter the part of your e-mail before the "@" for "Login Name".
  8. Highlight the "Checking Mail" category.
  9. Check "Save Password" if you would like to avoid entering your password every time you check your e-mail. Do this only if you are confident your privacy will not be compromised.
  10. Select "Required, Alternate Port" for "Secure Sockets when Receiving".
  11. Highlight the "Incoming Mail" category.
  12. Make sure "Leave mail on Server" is not checked.
  13. Highlight the "Sending Mail" category.
  14. Enter "geology.wisc.edu" for "Domain to add to unqualified addresses".
  15. Make sure "Allow authentication" is checked.
  16. Select "Required, Alternate Port" for "Secure Sockets when Sending".
  17. Click "OK".
    Mac OS X - Eudora
    If Eudora is launched from the applications folder it will assume your e-mail and settings are stored in your home folder under "Documents" in "Eudora Folder".
  1. Launch Eudora.
  2. Go to the "Special" menu and select "Settings".
  3. Highlight the "Getting Started" category.
  4. Enter the part of your e-mail before the "@" for "User Name".
  5. Enter "geology.wisc.edu" for "Mail Server"
  6. Put in your real name under "Real Name". This will be sent along with your e-mails.
  7. Enter "geology.wisc.edu" for "SMTP Server".
  8. Highlight the "Checking Mail" category.
  9. Check "Save Password" if you would like to avoid entering your password every time you check your e-mail. Do this only if you are confident your privacy will not be compromised.
  10. Make sure "Leave mail on Server" is not checked.
  11. Highlight the "SSL" category. It is near the bottom of the list.
  12. Select "Required, Alternate Port" for "SSL for POP", "SSL for SMTP" and "SSL for IMAP".
  13. Click "OK".
    Mac OS X - Mail.app
    Mail.app requires you to set up your e-mail when it first launches. Fill out the blanks as best as you can. Once Mail actually launches, open the preferences and follow these instructions.
  1. Open the "Accounts" preferences.
  2. "Account Type" should be "POP".
  3. "Email Address:" is hopefully self-explanatory.
  4. Put in your real name under "Full Name". This will be sent along with your e-mails.
  5. Enter "geology.wisc.edu" for "Incoming Mail Server".
  6. "User Name" is the part of your e-mail address before the "@".
  7. Put in your password under "Password" and click "Continue".
  8. "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" should be "geology.wisc.edu:username".
  9. Click on "Server Settings...".
  10. "Outgoing Mail Server:" should be "geology.wisc.edu".
  11. Make sure "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" is checked and the "Server Port:" is 465.
  12. "Authentication:" should be "Password".
  13. "User Name" once again is the part of your e-mail address before the "@".
  14. Click "OK".
  15. Open the "Advanced" tab.
  16. "Use SSL" should be checked and the port here should be 995.
  17. "Authentication:" should be "Password".
  18. Close the preferences window and you should be all set.
