Research Investigation 4, task 2
Evaluation of precision and accuracy of isotopic analysis using the MMS

Current methods for isotopic analysis of H, C, O, S, Fe, Ca, and Mg require large and heavy mass spectrometers (1-5 tons) that have complex arrays of Faraday collectors and electron multipliers/ion counters, which are impossibly bulky and fragile for space missions. Moreover, isotopic analysis in such instruments involve a restricted mass range, requiring multiple analyses tuned to specific elements, and/or peak hoping, which dramatically reduces duty cycle.

Our work in Task 2 will include:

  • A detailed evaluation and calibration of the CCD detector array in the MMS.  In addition, calibration curves will be established using representative natural samples, cross-calibrated with isotopic analysis using conventional mass spectrometry and chemical separation procedures.
