Diagnostic properties:

  • Color: azure-blue.
  • Streak: pale blue.
  • Hardness: 3.5 to 4.
  • Specific Gravity: 3.77.
  • Luster: vitreous.
  • Cleavage: one plane perfect; one plane fair.
  • Transparency: transparent to translucent.
  • Occurrence: common.
  • Crystal system: monoclinic.
  • Uses: a valuable ornamental stone; also a minor ore of copper.
  • Name: in allusion to its color.
